Breast Lifting (mastopexy)

This is a surgery procedure through which ptosed breasts ("fallen") are lifted.
The causes of breast ptosis are various, the most important including:

genetic
multiple pregnancies
long period of lactation
sudden and massive reduction of body mass, etc.

Fallen breasts could have normal consistency or lack of volume, the procedures of rebuilding the normal shape of the breast being distinct for each of these two cases.

Breast ptosis consists of 4 levels of seriousness, the classification being made depending on the position of the areola-mammilary complex against the infra mammary notch (submammary). This classification is very important and represents an essential instrument for the composition of the surgery plan by the surgeon. The technique varies with the ptosis level; more serious the ptosis higher the number of resulting scars.

In case the breast lacks volume and the ptosis is relatively small, breast correction could be made only through insertion of a silicone implant which, by volume filling-up, will make the mammary gland esthetic and will "fix" it in a satisfactory position. In this case the only resulting scar is the one located in the infra mammary notch.

Where the ptosis is bigger and the breast lacks the volume, with the implant insertion the skin in excess must also be resected, and section and, respectively, the resulting scar being periareolar (around the areola). In cases of serious ptosis the periareolar scar is accompanied by another vertical scar and sometimes by another one which will be located in the infra mammary notch (scar in reversed "T").

Which are the healing stages of the scars?

The scars heal throughout many stages. Until approximately 6 months they are in a continuous remedy process, the scars being red and big. Following this period the scars get mature, get white and, finally, heal through formation of a white fine line.

The scarring process does not depend only on the surgery technique, which is very accurate, or on the type of suture materials, which is of the best quality for all our patients. An extremely important factor is also the way each one of us heals. We cannot act on this factor if it represents an impediment.
Sometimes it is needed to retouch postsurgery scars with local anesthesia, after not less than 6 months since the primary intervention.

Which are the complications of the surgery?

Practice complications could occur immediately after the surgery:

massive bleeding
hematoma
integument necrosis
infections
disruption of suture notches, etc.

In-hospital period for 24 hours in our clinic, use of vacuum drainage for 48 hours until the extraction of the suture material, all these will prevent most of the above listed complications. This is why it is compulsory to come anytime your doctor asks you to! Other complications could occur remotely such as:

deficient scarring
wrong position of the areola-mammilary complex
capsular contraction in case of using mammary implants
wrong position of mammary implants against the mammary gland
mammary asymmetries, etc.

Which are the contraindications of this practice?

The contraindications of this practice include:

serious blood diseases
sugar diabetes
contagious serious diseases
autoimmune maladies
serious dermatological diseases
proneness to keloid formation

How can I tell if I need a breast lifting with or without implant?

Your surgeon will ask you to come to many consultations before the surgery to establish the surgery date.

This has the purpose to inform you as fully as possible about the surgery you will be submitted to. Throughout these consultations you will be measured and one or more methods to solve you problem will be suggested to you, and you will have to decide exactly what you wish for.

You will be shown pictures of patients similar to you who were in the healing stages and how the final result looks like. Hence you will know precisely what to expect at.

A a generally valid rule that could guide you through your personal case, if your breast lacks the volume fully and the skin excess is big, the areola and the mammilla being long fallen, then you definitely need an implant lifting. If your breast is affected by ptosis more or less, but its volume is significant than the lifting will not require mandatory the insertion of an implant due to existing volume could be raised surgically.

After how much time since the surgery I can resume normal life?

Notch healing occurs after 10 to 12 days, when the suture wires are also extracted. It is welcomed the use of a support brassier, for at list 2 months since the surgery. Postsurgery scars must be cared for daily through application of some special creams or plastrum

If the postsurgery scar is just periareolar then UV exposure is welcomed immediately after the surgery, their hyperpigmentation making them finally even less visible! Should the scars be multiple then UV exposure is contraindicated for not less than 6 months.

After 2 months you could stop wearing non stop the support brassiere which subsequently will be replaced during the day by the regular bra. All arm movement will be resumed gradually, the intensity degree of physical activities will increase gradually from one week to another after the surgery, in such manner that after 2 months and a half up to 3 months, everything goes back to normal.

Although the treatment is very efficient, 1% of the patients do not obtain the results they want!
