Hair Implant (Hair Transplant)
This surgery is addressed to both, men and women, for biggeror smaller areas of alopecia. Baldness (alopecia) occurs more frequently to menin the parietal and/or frontal region and could extend to the entire scalp. The causes of the baldness could be local or general.
Following a dermatological consultation, that excludes or treats all local causes, the general causesremain, more exactly the hormonal causes for which practically there are nottoo many options of treatment. These patients are recommended hair transplant.
The procedure consists of sampling a strip of tegument with hair in the occipitalregion (hind head), which is processed through multiple incisions to obtainvery small skin fragments, with one or two hair follicles.
These will beinserted at the level of the hairless tegument, step by step, until all follicles have been completely transplanted. Another practice is to use asampling instrument, specially created, to sample round and small skin and hair fragments.
The donor area does not require suture due to it healsspontaneously. Not all transplanted follicles will "catch roots",some of them being removed. More than one procedure of this type is required inthe same area to obtain a satisfactory result.
The donor area is directly sutured. Another option to cover the alopecia area is to useexpanders. These devices are inserted in the area covered by hair in the immediate proximity of the bald-head, and are expanded throughout more than oneweek until obtaining enough hair skin.
Through a subsequent procedure the expanders will be taken out, the hairless tegument area will be excised and thefailure thus generated will be covered by the skin in excess covered by hair.(see scar correction). In any moment of the procedures and with any form ofalopecia the surgical treatment must be doubled by application of lotions containing aminoxil or minoxidil having the role to regenerate hairy follicles but specially to prevent the destruction of the new ones.
In small alopeciaareas some injections of cortisone agents could be tried on, provided to berepeated after few weeks to regenerate the hairy follicles.
Frequently asked questions
When is the hair transplant recommended?
Hair transplant is recommended in case of baldness resistant to local treatments, to men and women.
The surgery could be performed at anyage, after 18. In case of serious coagulation diseases, serious contagious diseases, dermatological diseases or sugar diabetes it is recommended torefrain ourselves from any surgical procedure.
How many treatment sessions are needed to obtain asatisfactory result?
Usually it is required to have more than one session for thesame area. Normal hair density will be obtained following many treatment sessions, from 3 to 5. Not all hairy follicles are “catching roots”,approximately 20 to 30% being lost with every surgery.
What do the post surgical care consist of?
Following the surgery the area where the hair was transplanted must not be affected.
The appearance is pretty unsatisfactory inthe first weeks. After 3 to 4 weeks it is allowed to rasp the area and after another 2 weeks the hair that survived the transplant starts to increase. After 3 to 4months the procedure could be repeated.
Is the result permanent?
Once obtained the final result is permanent, the new hairy follicles not being affected by subsequent hormonal changes. The association inthe transplanted regions with the cosmetic products based on aminoil orminoxidil is welcomed as well as regular injection of cortisone agents.
Does the transplanted hair look any different?
Based on the way the hairy follicles were transplanted, on the hair type chosen for transplant, on surgeon's expertise and on the accuracy of the procedure, the transplanted hair could look differently or not against the hair in the other areas of the scalp.
Are there any visible scars in the location of hairsampling?
The location of hair sampling is closed through directsuture to heal in a very less visible scar, being hidden in the occipital hairyarea.
After 4 to 5 months a new strip of hairy tegument could besampled in the same area, the resulted failure being closed also through directsuture.
