The vagina is a tubular organ that connects external genital organs with the internal ones, more exactly the vulva with the uterus. Its sizes are variable depending on height, race, age. The vagina is a muscle organ which can adapt its diameter to requirements. In some physiological conditions (age, after birth, hereditary), this adaptability is not functional anymore due to the relaxation installed at the level of these muscles, and for the improvement of the sexual life a surgical correction is required.

Vaginoplasty is a surgery that corrects the diameter of the vaginal lumen through excision of some mucous parts and a series of myoraphies.

Another option to “narrow” the vaginal lumen is the microlipofilling, which consists of circumferential fat injections in the vaginal wall thickness, under its mucous, until obtaining the expected result. (see microlipofilling). In both cases an epidural anesthesia is needed, and the recovery following the surgery occurs within approximately 5 days. Sexual contact could be resumed after 3 to 4 weeks.

How long does the heal take?

Sutures healing takes about 10 to 12 days. The suture wires are absorbable. Healing is final after 4 weeks since the surgery, reason for which a sexual break is needed during this period.

After how much time can I resume sexual life?

The intercourse could be resumed after 4 weeks since the surgery. Is this period is not adhered to it might be possible that muscle sutures fail and the surgery is not successfully. In case of microlipofilling the same period of sexual break is needed for the transplanted fat tissue integrates with the new location.

Is this a painful surgery?

The surgery is not painful due to it takes place under local (epidural) anesthesia or general anesthesia (upon request). Usual normal pain control medication is enough to fight the post surgical discomfort.

What do the presurgical preparations consist of?

Before the surgery a series of blood tests must be done that allow us to exclude the possibility of any blood coagulation issue. The vulva area is extremely well vascularized and bleeding could be abundant. With at least 2 weeks before the surgery you most stop taking any drug, except for those prescribed by your surgeon.

The day before the surgery the vagina will be cleaned with worm water and vaginal antiseptic agents, and then a betadine bolus will be inserted in the vagina. The last meal will be taken the evening before the surgery day, a meal comprised of food easy to digest. After this it is forbidden to eat, drink water or chew gum. The stomach must be emptied of drainage and food in case it is decided that the surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

What do the postsurgical care consist of?

After the surgery, due to the bleeding risk, it is required that you remain in the clinic under medical surveillance for 24 hours. Upon dismissal you'll be prescribed a series a antibiotic, pain control medication, anti inflammatory drugs, and for vagina cleaning some betadine bolus. Antiseptic powder is welcomed and must be applied following every wash with water and soap. It is preferable to use special soaps in this area due to these are not so aggressive and encourage healing. Betadine soap is also very useful. Bandage is not mandatory if you stay at home.

Underwear is not mandatory in house. In case you go out you must use an external vulval pack and panties not too tight. Don't wear tight pants at list for 3 to 4 weeks following the surgery. It is contraindicated to ride a bike, the seated position for more than half of hour without break, for a period of not less than 4 weeks after the surgery. The massage of the surged areas is forbidden for not less than 4 weeks.

Which are the complications of the surgery?

Immediate complications consist of unwanted abundant bleeding and this is way it is better that you stay under medical surveillance for at list 24 hours.

If the postsurgical care indications are not complied with the infection, surged wound cleft, hematoma, seroma, etc, might occur.

Although the treatment is very efficient, 1% of the patients do not obtain the results they want!
