Chemical Peeling
This treatment practice could restore the young appearance of your face skin, by removing the hyperpigmentation caused by an extended sun exposure, the fine wrinkles, irritations or post-acne scars. The skin will look younger, more stretched and fresher as before, even if not all imperfections have been removed. Profound wrinkles and other irregularities will require other treatments or practices.
Chemical agents used are the following: the glycol acid for superficial wrinkles and irritations and the three-clor -acetic acid (TCA) for more profound irregularities and chromatopathies. In case of more aggressive treatments it is required a medical vacation, that could take from few days up to few weeks.
There could also be used low acid combinations if these are individually used, although, if combined, their combination "strength" should be increased. These compounds could be used in many concentrations, depending on the depth of the peeling that we wish to make. More than one session is needed in order to obtain the expected result.
The skin healed following such treatment will be able to produce pigment like before, and will not get achromic. However, these patients are recommended to use cosmetic products containing UV blocking agents or to avoid sun exposure for few months after the treatment. The same treatment could also be used to "reduce" the unaesthetic appearance of the stretch marks. Chemical peeling:
-
removes superficial wrinkles
-
removes superficial irritations
-
corrects pigmentation problems
-
could also be used on the neck and in other areas of the body
-
some pre-treatments with Retinoid A pr AHA creams are sometimes useful
-
could be selected for darken color face skins
-
the depth of the peeling could be adjusted
-
more than one treatment is needed to obtain and maintain the expected result.
The anesthesia is not required for this type of peeling due to the agent itself has an anesthetic effect. Soft sedatives could be used before and during the treatment to help the patient relax. The surgeon will carefully apply the peeling solution on the previously cleaned up skin. A prick or burn sensation will occur throughout the application of the solution. The treatment for the entire face takes in average 15 minutes.
Two or more chemical peeling must be applied on to obtain the expected result. Sun proofing is important. Your doctor will recommend you some special products containing UVA and UVB blocking agents, to be used on a daily basis.
Frequently asked questions
What means chemical peeling?
Chemical peeling is the practice that uses chemical agents such as acetic hydroxide acid, three-clore-acetic acid or glycol acid to remove superficial and damaged skin layers and to rejuvenate aged skin.
When could a chemical peeling be applied?
The treatment could be applied on anytime there is an injury to be removed. It is better to be made during winter. The minim age limit is 13 to 14 years. The maximum age limit does not exist.
What can you learn from an evaluation session for chemical peeling?
The injected area becomes red, worm and painful upon touch, these changes maintaining for few hours to few days, depending on the genetic material of each one of us. In this period it is not recommended to take pain control medication due to these could inhibit the effect of the adipolytic agent.
How is the chemical peeling applied on?
The skin is previously treated with special cleaning products or is submitted to a microdermabrasion for remove natural fats located at the skin level. The acid is applied on in consecutive layers. The action time of the acid is either well defined before and upon expiry it neutralizes and the product is removed, or is carefully monitored by your doctor who will decide the right time to neutralize it.
What to expect after the implementation of this practice?
The sensation that you will feel is of a sun burn or wind burn at the face level. The skin is excessively stretched and, if face mimics is exaggerated, some cracks accompanied by bleeding might occur. The skin must be allowed to heal naturally without expediting the "excoriation". If these recommendations are not adhered to, serious scars might appear.
Is it painful?
You could encounter a heat and stretch sensation based on the peeling depth. The doctor could place a fan near your face to reduce these sensations.
When do the first results take shape?
You will notice the appearance of a pink tegument under the peeling. It is forbidden to "help" the healing process by accelerating the exfoliation removal. Within few weeks pink color will disappear depending also on the peeling depth.
Which risks does this procedure involve?
In case you suffer from oral herpes this must be treated with Acyclovir. This product decreases significantly the risk of spreading the viral infection. If your disease exacerbates during the healing period, the virus could spread at the face level, causing severe and permanent scars.
Pay great care to the exfoliation! In case of deeper peeling more than one week is needed for full recovery. Hyperpigmentaton (excessive skin color) or hypopigmentation (skin fading) are potential incidents. These are temporary.
The infection occurs in exceptional cases; the erythema and the skin exfoliation process must be cared for appropriately. The scars might occur only in case post peeling recommendations are not complied with.
Which are the most important contraindications of the chemical peeling?
In case of continuous and systematic exposure to sun the peeling is not indicated. You must immediately inform your doctor if you're suffering from a herpes rash. Acute herpes, warts, history of keloid scars represent absolute contraindications.
The administration of Accutane in the past year is also a contraindication to this procedure. The pregnancy, the lactation period, the history of autoimmune diseases, irradiation or chemotherapeutic treatments, all these are cases to avoid peeling.
